What does it take to be equal? What will it take for us to close the gender gap?
I ponder those questions every International Woman’s Day. This year the theme #ChoosetoChallenge makes complete sense. if we don’t challenge, it will take 3 generations to get there at the current pace.
So I’m choosing to challenge a couple of points in this episode about what it takes to be equal:
- We think it takes policies from the government or businesses. But we can thrive and be equal before those happen.
- Being and feeling equal means two things: to stop overgiving and stop underasking.
- Overgiving is when we become so adaptable that our needs fade in the background and we dedicate our time, money, energy to others or other causes.
- Underasking is when we don’t voice a need, ask for what we want, apply for an opportunity – for fear of failure, rejection or it not working out.
Overgiving and underasking work as two sides of the same coin to keep you feeling less of – unequal. Comparison is then the trap that kills all your energy to change the game.
Being equal starts with us, let’s not wait.
Please share this episode with women in your network, family, workplace – so collectively we can feel empowered to start from where we are, and not wait for outside organisations.
